The Royal Academy of Arts is world famous for its continuous programme of outstanding exhibitions. The Academy promotes the work of past masters and contemporary artists and the popular summer exhibition (an open showcase) has been held since 1768. These are of the highest quality, comparable to those at the National Gallery, the Tate Gallery and leading art galleries outside the United Kingdom. In 2004 the highlights of the Academy's permanent collection went on display in the newly restored reception rooms of the |
original section of Burlington House, which are now known as the "John Madejski Fine Rooms". The collection focuses on British art and artists and predominantly ranges from the 18th century to the present day. Highlights in the collection of paintings and sculpture include major works by Reynolds, Constable, Alma-Tadema, Millais, Leighton, Sargent, and Hockney.
