Pollocks Toy Museum
National Gallery National Gallery. London

This deceptively large museum houses thousands of old toys including board games, tin toys, puppets, doll houses, teddy bears, wax dolls, comics and craft toys from around the world.

The most impressive collection, however, is of toy theatres, which should be no surprise as Benjamin Pollock was the leading Victorian manufacturer of these popular toys.

This really is a magical little place (not least because you go up three flights of stairs, down four and leave by the same

door!). You follow a higgledy-piggledy trail up creaking stairs and around a warren of rooms, each dedicated to a different toy theme.

For anyone over 30, it'll be a poignant prance down memory lane, but it's perhaps a little creepy for children. The shop has as fantastic a range of wooden toys as you're likely to see anywhere else.
